Cinque Terre: Five Colorful Villages You’ll Fall in Love With
Some places are unforgettable not only because of their beauty, but because of the atmosphere they create. Cinque Terre is exactly that kind of place — five colorful villages built on the cliffs above the Ligurian Sea, where every corner offers a new breathtaking view.
Located in the Liguria region in northwestern Italy, Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the country. Liguria is famous for its dramatic coastline, charming fishing villages, green hills meeting the sea, and a relaxed Italian lifestyle. It is a place where you can enjoy incredible views, fresh seafood, traditional cuisine, and the simple pleasure of slowing down.
Cinque Terre is part of a National Park and consists of five villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. Each one has its own character, so I highly recommend visiting all five.
How to get there?
The easiest way to reach Cinque Terre is by train. The closest main towns are La Spezia and Levanto, from where trains run regularly between all five villages.
I would not recommend coming by car. The roads are narrow, parking is limited, and the villages are much easier to explore by train and on foot.
A good option is to buy the Cinque Terre Card, which includes train travel between the villages and access to hiking trails.
Manarola
Probably the most famous and photographed village of Cinque Terre. The colorful houses built into the cliffs create the iconic view everyone recognizes.
I recommend walking up toward the Church of San Lorenzo and the viewpoints above the village. The panorama from there is unforgettable, especially in the evening when the sun starts to set.
Monterosso al Mare
The largest of the five villages and the best choice if you want some beach time. Here you can relax by the sea, walk along the promenade, and enjoy restaurants with a beautiful coastal view.
Riomaggiore
This is the first village of Cinque Terre and a beautiful introduction to the area. Walk down to the small harbor, admire the colorful houses, and enjoy the views of the sea.
For the best photos, walk up toward the viewpoint above the village — especially beautiful during sunset.
Corniglia
The only village that is not directly by the sea. It sits high on a cliff and offers amazing views of the coastline.
To reach the village from the train station, you can climb the famous Lardarina staircase (around 350 steps) or take a local shuttle bus. It is usually quieter than the other villages, making it perfect for a more peaceful walk.
Vernazza
For me, one of the most charming villages in Cinque Terre. The small harbor, colorful buildings, and old streets create a truly magical atmosphere.
One of the best viewpoints is on the hiking path towards Monterosso. The view of Vernazza from above is one of the most beautiful scenes in the region.
Food you must try in Liguria
The food in this region is simple, fresh, and full of flavor.
My recommendations:
Pesto Genovese — Liguria is the birthplace of traditional basil pesto. Try it with pasta, especially trofie pasta.
Fresh seafood — grilled fish, mussels, anchovies, and seafood pasta are very popular here.
Focaccia Ligure — a soft, flavorful Italian flatbread that is perfect for breakfast or a quick snack.
Local white wine — especially the wines produced in the Cinque Terre area.
Italian gelato — the perfect treat while walking through the villages.

Cinque Terre is a beautiful but not the cheapest destination in Italy.

When is the best time to visit?
The best months are May–June and September–October. The weather is usually perfect for walking, around 20–25°C, and there are fewer tourists compared to the peak summer season.
July and August are the busiest months. Temperatures can reach 30°C or more, and the narrow streets can become very crowded.
Spring brings green hills and flowers, while autumn offers warm sea temperatures, beautiful sunsets, and a calmer atmosphere.
My tips:
• Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the villages before the crowds.
• Wear comfortable shoes — there are many stairs and uphill paths.
• Take your time and do not rush between villages.
• Stay at least one night if possible to experience Cinque Terre after the day-trippers leave.
Cinque Terre is not just a beautiful place for photos. It is about slow mornings, sea views, colorful streets, local food, and moments you want to remember forever.
